5.0 out of 5 stars Washing Machine Surviver, October 23, 2010

I usually don't review stuff i got off here b/c that'd be too many.
BUT i believe this is an interesting thing right here.
I have no comments on how this USB works, because it works perfectly fine for me.
I like that this doesn't need a cap because it goes into itself like a turtle.
The thing i wanted to post was that it survived the washing machine.
No i didn't realize i had it in my pocket and until i took everything out of the washer, it was just right there.
I was like, crap, $15 down the wash and then i'd have to replace it.
Surprisingly it worked, every other electronic item just dies in there!
That is the total point to this review, so if you just happen to forget it in your pocket, it may work! *I don't advise you to actually purposefully put your USB in the wash now, but you forget its in your pocket.*

1.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculously slow, July 8, 2010

This review is from: SanDisk Cruzer 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ36-008G-A11 (Personal Computers)
I originally bought this to transfer data from an old Xbox 360 to the new "slim" type. It worked without a problem, but transfers were incredibly slow. I compared the speed of this unit on three difference PCs with other USB drives that I have.

My 5+ year old 2 GB Patriot transfers data at about 16 MB/sec. My 3+ year old 4 GB Kingston transfers data at around 26 MB/sec. This SanDisk Cruzer, however, transfers at an appalling 3 MB/sec! That's 1/5 the speed of a 5+ year old USB drive! And this is on a brand new 6-core, 3.2 GHZ system with USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports!

"Slow" does not begin to describe this drive. When a five-year-old USB drive can run rings around a brand new USB drive when it comes to performance, something is desperately wrong. I'll just stick with Patriot or Kingston USB drives. I'll never by a SanDisk Cruzer again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Feels Like a Step Back, July 30, 2009
This review is from: SanDisk Cruzer 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ36-008G-A11 (Personal Computers)
I bought one of these because it was on sale. I would've preferred a SanDisk Cruzer Micro 8 GB Flash Drive instead, but I didn't know how much I would've preferred it until I bought this.

This version doesn't seem to be a replacement of the Micro, so I imagine it's faster, but there probably isn't a noticeable difference. The differences I noticed were aesthetic. This drive is pretty small, but it's slightly bigger than the Micro. I don't get the weird contour thing either. It's like a skewed parallelogram. The "switch" is the same way and I really don't think it makes it look any better. A more functional difference is the switch itself. The Micro's switch needed a moderate amount of pressure to get the drive to extend and about the same amount to retract. The regular Cruzer opens much easier, which I... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent flash drive, October 4, 2011

I was somewhat hesitant purchasing this drive, as there were no reviews yet. I was mostly interested in read/write speeds, as they weren't shown on the information page (or perhaps I missed it). For the 8 GB model, 7.53 GB are accessible, and the drive comes formatted in FAT32. I tried a few read/write tests, with digital camera RAW files. Copying around 7 GB resulted in a sustained write speed of 5.6 MB/sec, and sustained read speeds of the same files was around 28.6 MB/sec. I was impressed by the read speeds, but slightly disappointed in the write speeds. Granted I won't often be filling the drive up (which would take about 20 minutes), so it won't be too big of an issue, and for most data transfers I would not have benefited from any additional write speed.

Build quality is fairly impressive, as it's made mostly out of aluminum. It feels solid in my hands, and looks to be fairly durable. The ends are plastic though, but I don't think that matters much.

I... Read more

Pretty zippy for an inexpensive memory stick. Real solid feel. No annoying LED blinking while writing or reading. Does have a removable cap that will probably get lost. Lanyard hole on end.

Speed test:

Writing speed: 7.88 MByte/s
Reading speed: 17.7 MByte/s

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Value, November 1, 2011
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program ( What's this?)
I've gotten some AmazonBasics products before and have always been satisfied and this Flash Drive is no different. Its a 4GB flash drive for $10. Pretty good value there. The drive's construction seems sturdy so far. No problems with file transfers or holding data.

There's not much to say other than this AmazonBasics flash drive does what it is supposed to do. The price point is right for what it is. Another good AmazonBasics product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much faster than rated - at least for larger files, January 29, 2011

This Kingston DataTraveler DT101 Gen2 32GB USB flash drive has a very nice compact design. It is about the same size as the SanDisk Cruzer Micro (with the USB port retracted). See the size comparison picture I uploaded to Customer Images section. What cannot be seen from the picture is that the Kingston drive is slightly thicker. That makes it impossible to insert two Kingston flash drives into two adjacent USB ports, whereas two Sandisk drives can be stacked one on top of another.

I benchmarked the Kingston DT101 G2 flash drive as soon as I received it. The initial result I got, using the free "Flash Memory Toolkit" program, was not very impressive. It... Read more

I have a collection of USB thumb drives and use them for a wide range of activities. I transport files, use them as a portable work environment, install portable apps, encrypt them with passwords, transport files from one network to another, use them to boot, ReadyBoost, and run an entire OS - things most consumers will never likely care about.

Because I use them so often, it's hard to get excited over a new USB drive unless it has something new or innovative about the design. I'm not excited about this drive. I had an immediate positive reaction to a USB drive with a similar design concept: a small footprint drive with a swinging metal shield. But where the PNY Micro Swivel Attache perfected the swivel design in a tiny 4GB drive, and the... Read more

The best thing USB flash drives have going for them is their price, which has been in a free fall for several years and about to go below $1 per GB at the time I'm writing this review. In addition, if your goal is storing data independently of any specific piece of equipment - camera, reader, music player - their size/bulk is an advantage because it's so much easier to lose or break an SD card once it's out of its host.

Briefly, this is what it's worth knowing about this item:

- I can't see that I've had a big problem with losing caps but the 'capless' design is quite innovative and it does not hurt.
- It's fast enough to support video transfer but, of course, it does not come close to the theoretical 60MB/sec max I/O speed that the USB 2.0 specification allows.
- Installs itself and does not require any software to be recognized as a 'drive' on a Vista or XP computer. Can't speak for other operating systems.
- It formats and partitions as... Read more
